Legacy Jund 101 : How to Play the Best $25,000 Deck in Magic the Gathering

2021 has kicked off to quite the start huh? Competitive Magic is still an absolute mess but the game is played more than ever. MTG Arena has changed the game forever; for better or for worse. While I don’t spend much time playing anything on Arena, I have been digging back to my roots; JUND.
Brainstorm, Force of Will, Ice Fang, Hullbreacher? Sounds like a good time for Duress, Hymn, Chains of Mephistopheles and friends. Let’s roll some dice and make our opponents discard some cards shall we?

Deck Building Choices and Preferences
4 Thoughtseize, 3 Duress
Discard spells are more important than ever in old formats; Modern and Legacy alike. I suggest a full playset of Thoughtseize along with 2–3 Duress to compliment them. Duress lets you snag Force of Will and Sneak Attack which I believe is worth the upside over Inquisition. But if for some odd reason you didn’t expect to play against many blue decks you could make the swap for IOK/more removal. However, I simply don’t ever imagine playing a physical Legacy event that isn’t a bunch of knuckleheads playing Brainstorm.
2 Sylvan Library, 3 Chains of Mephistopheles
Most Magic players have never seen a Chains of Mephistopheles; and you probably never will either. They’re extremely hard to find and very expensive. In fact, they’re so rare that I think people on the internet even forget that they existed. I can’t tell you the last time I saw a Legacy decklist featuring Chains. When you’ve been playing an archetype longer than anyone else it’s great that you can have the edge of vast knowledge over the card pool. I keep playing Chains and people keep casting their blue cards anyway. It’s really nice. They lose on the spot. People do it in person too. Trust me. Most people play like shit.
I’ve only had a chance to pick up one Legends Library so far. This card is just as beautiful to look at as it is to cast. There’s something about Sylvan Library that simply commands power. It’s very difficult to remove outside of Teferi and Decay. I have no issue paying 8 life when I untap with it. That’s called Jund baby.
People shit on this card all the time. They’re all stupid. None of you know what you’re talking about. Wrenn and Six is banned and Dark Confidant is great. I’ll draw two cards thanks. Greatness, at any cost. Make sure you get the Judge Promos. If you buy the Modern Master’s version you don’t even deserve to play Jund. Have some self respect.
Flex Slot Options:
These are the cards I would consider for the flex slot. I think Kolaghan’s Command is probably the best one. They all have upside in different ways. Considering how good Artifacts are in Legacy I think Kolaghan’s Command is the answer and I can even see playing 2–3 depending on the meta you want to attack. Klothys is an awesome threat against Snowko and random Midrange (Uro). Liliana the Last Hope makes your edict effects a bit better and is great against the Tribal decks and against Delver.

Pyroblast is arguably the most important red card to splash for. With blue decks taking up a huge share of the format almost always, Pyroblast is essentially a perfect sideboard card. Bring in a bunch of Pyroblasts against decks that play Islands and blow up all their shit with it.
Plague Engineer is at its best in Legacy. With tribal decks such as Elves and Goblins, alongside fan favorite classics like Death and Taxes there is no short of good hits. You can also make people cry when they play Delver, Noble Hierarch, Ice-Fang, Brazen Borrower and much, much more. If they have small creatures you want to slam this in your deck.
Ol’ White bordered Choke; a classic. What is there to say about this card other than the fact it is a god sent? A true masterpiece. The satisfaction that arises from slamming a Choke, staring your opponent down in the gut of their eye and passing back knowing they can’t do anything for the rest of the damn game. Priceless. Bring these in when your opponent is playing Islands. Make them suffer.
Collector’s Ouphe is a Rockstar against Karn Decks, Bauble Decks, Mox Decks, and frankly any dumbass artifact bullshit. Don’t put up with that shit. Plus he kinda looks like Alice Cooper if you look hard enough. If you opponent has artifacts that have activated abilities bring this shit in.
Bring in your Four Leyline against Hogaak and Uro. You’re welcome. Big Brain.
Pithing Needle fits some very specific roles such as addressing Oko, Thief of Crowns, Teferi, and Tibalt. The Tibalt decks are so all in on Tibalt that a turn 1 Pithing Needle should hit them in the knee caps pretty good. Bring in Pithing Needle against Snowko, Miracles, Tibalt Combo and frankly whatever the hell you want.
